It’s easy to turn to Google to get images for your website but this can lead to big trouble. Many people don’t think that anyone will notice that they are using a copyrighted image and then a threatening email turns up and copyright infringement has taken place. Never fear here are my top ten recommendations of websites where you can legally download high-quality images for free.

There’s loads of images here (more than 2 million!) and the search functions is highly developed so chances are you will find what you are looking for. It’s one of the most popular free image site so the only drawback can be other people will be using your image too.

A huge range of images, similar to Pixabay, you can find high-resolution photos in practically any category and the downloads are limitless.

Pexels is one of my favourite free image sites – beautiful images across a huge range of categories that so often capture exactly what I am looking for. Again a great search function too.

There are gorgeous free photos to use here. Maybe a more unusual or stylised range than some of the other sites. Great for ideas.

All their free stock photos are organized into categories so you can easily find what you’re looking for. Loving the range of textures and backgrounds.

Stock snap

I have only recently come across Stock Snap but on first look love the range of photos from the bright and colourful to the dark and edgy. Helpful categories too.

Produced by Swedish photographer Jonas Wimmerström, Cupcake offers a beautiful range of nature photographs.

Barn images

While Barn Images doesn’t have as large a number of stock photos as some of the above websites, there are some amazing outdoor images.

Please note: Nearly all of the photos listed here fall under the creative commons public domain dedication (or have no licensing restrictions all together). This means you can copy, modify, distribute and perform the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission.
